I'm often asked to explain more about Body Electric style Taoist massage and bodywork.  It's not an easy question to answer.  Each person's experience is different.  And fundamentally, it's not about how it's done or how you're massaged.  It's really about letting go into the depth of experience that it can offer you - into an experience of conscious aliveness.  Personally, I have experienced many Taoist body massages.  Amongst the sensations and perceptions that I have found at different times are:

  • yinyang.gifA tingling aliveness spreading and glowing throughout the body
  • A complete detachment from the physical realm - a floating in space, weightless and free, in touch with the cosmic void
  • A strong awareness of erotic energies flowing all around the body
  • A fear of the unknown and of emotions buried deep within and struggling to be expressed
  • An opening of the body through total submission and vulnerability
  • A connection with the Divine at both an inner and an outer level
  • A sense of calm, peace, relaxation and joy

Of course none of this is guaranteed for anyone else!  What you experience depends on what you bring, your level of self-control, your openness to new self-expression, your willingness to let go, your ability to enter into it without expectations and pre-conceptions.

Taoist traditional bodywork practice is concerned with inner alchemy - that is, the transforming of one aspect of ourself into another.  Here, the alchemy is concerned with transforming our erotic energies into a spiritual experience of bliss.

Much has been written about Taoist and Tantric practices and I have found the following quotations reflect some of my own experiences:

"[Body] Orgasm is a state where your body is no longer felt as matter; it vibrates like energy, electricity.  It vibrates so deeply, from the very foundation, that you completely forget that it is a material thing.  It becomes an electric phenomenon. ... There are no longer any boundaries to you - pulsating but no longer substantial."

"Because of three basic elements, you come to a blissful moment.  Firstly, timelessness: you transcend time completely.  There is no time.  You forget time completely, time ceases for you.  Not that time ceases: it ceases for you; you are not in it.  Secondly, for the first time, you lose your ego; you become egoless.  You are not, nor is there the other.  You and your beloved are both lost in something else.  Thirdly, you are natural for the first time.  You are a part of nature - a part of trees, a part of animals, a part of the stars - a part.  You are immersed into a greater something - the Cosmos, the Tao.  You cannot even swim in it; you are not.  You are just floating - being taken by the current."    From Sex, quotations from Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh

And this extract from Lao Tzu's Hua Hu Ching summarises the original Taoist approach:

A person's approach to sexuality is a sign of his level of evolution. Unevolved persons practice ordinary sexual intercourse.
Placing all emphasis upon the sexual organs, they neglect the body's other organs and systems.
Whatever physical energy is accumulated is summarily discharged, and the subtle energies are similarly dissipated and disordered.
It is a great backward leap.

For those who aspire to the higher realms of living, there is angelic dual cultivation. Because every portion of the body, mind, and spirit yearns for the integration of yin and yang, angelic intercourse is led by the spirit rather than the sexual organs.
Where ordinary intercourse is effortful, angelic cultivation is calm, relaxed, quiet, and natural.
Where ordinary intercourse unites sex organs with sex organs, angelic cultivation unites spirit with spirit, mind with mind, and every cell of one body with every cell of the other body.
Culminating not in dissolution but in integration, it is an opportunity for a man and woman to mutually transform and uplift each other into the realm of bliss and wholeness.
The sacred ways of angelic intercourse are taught only by one who has himself achieved total energy integration, and taught only to students who follow the Integral Way with profound devotion, seeking to purify and pacify the entire world along with their own being.
However, if your virtue is especially radiant, it can be possible to open a pathway to the subtle realm and receive these celestial teachings directly from the immortals.
